Phelps Woman Arrested on Animal Cruelty Charges

SHARE NOW

A Phelps woman has been charged with animal cruelty after a dog was allegedly struck multiple times in a backyard on August 18.

Ontario County Animal Control reported that the 1-year-old Shepherd/Husky mix, named Bruce, could be heard wailing as he was struck. Investigators say 30-year-old Alexis Heitmann was yelling at the dog to stop barking while striking him. A video of the incident was obtained, leading to Heitmann’s arrest.

Officials say Bruce is in good health and was not injured, according to the Happy Tails Animal Shelter.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
