Fishers Fire District to Dissolve Oct. 1 After Commissioners’ Vote

SHARE NOW

The Fishers Fire District will officially dissolve on October 1, following a unanimous vote by the Board of Fire Commissioners.

The decision was announced during a special meeting on Monday night at Victor High School. While commissioners noted the district is financially stable at the moment, they cited long-term concerns about sustainability. Rising benefit costs and projections that the district’s tax levy could triple over the next decade were key factors in their decision.

The district, which covers 26 square miles of Victor, including Eastview Mall and part of the Thruway, will shut down operations at 7 a.m. on October 1. The move will leave 26 full-time firefighters without jobs.

Some members of the department expressed frustration with the decision, saying the board did not fully consider the impact of dissolving the district.

Meanwhile, town officials in Victor say they are working on a plan to ensure fire protection services continue without interruption after the closure.
