The Cayuga County Legislature is set to vote on extending a temporary hiring freeze for another two months amid ongoing budget challenges.
The freeze, which began June 1 and was scheduled to end August 31, would now remain in effect through October 31 if a resolution on the Ways and Means Committee agenda set for tonight is approved.
The hiring pause applies to most county departments and positions, though several roles are exempt, including jail custody officers, road patrol deputies, 911 dispatchers, fully funded positions necessary for mandated work, county attorney staff, caseworkers, seasonal employees, and staff social workers. Other exempt positions include a billing specialist in the Office of Mental Health, a DMV cashier, highway equipment operators, a real property tax clerk, and social services investigators.
The Legislature initially cited financial concerns when implementing the freeze. Chairman Jonathan Anna has previously noted that the county is facing a $5.6 million deficit, equivalent to the fund balance used in the 2025 budget.
