Following the success of its Book Buddies Pilot program, United Way of Cayuga County and the Auburn Enlarged City School District are expanding the program for the upcoming school year.
Originally trialed at Genesee Elementary School, Book Buddies will now be offered at Herman Ave Elementary as well. It will be offered at Genesee on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, and at Herman on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month.
The program is designed to improve students’ literacy skills, social skills, and attendance by pairing second graders with community volunteers. Students in the program are identified by their teachers early in the school year, while potential volunteers are vetted by both United Way and the district. Twice a month, the students and volunteers meet in the school library to read together during lunch.
According to United Way, 42% of program participants increased their attendance records compared to last year.
To help facilitate the expansion, United Way is seeking additional volunteers to join the program. Those interested in volunteering or who would like more information are asked to contact United Way Office & Programs Assistant Administrator Sarah Sayles at [email protected].
