A Sterling woman already facing welfare fraud charges in Wayne County is now accused of drug possession in Cayuga County.
Deputies arrested 47-year-old Brandy Disbennett on July 15 for seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor.
The charge follows a July 10 investigation in which Cayuga County deputies assisted the Wayne County Probation Office at a residence in Sterling. During that visit, Wayne County deputies took Disbennett into custody on welfare fraud charges. A search reportedly turned up a substance later confirmed to contain fentanyl or methamphetamine.
Disbennett turned herself in at the Cayuga County Public Safety Building, where she was processed and released with an appearance ticket.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
