SHARE NOW

A Campbell man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly defrauding the Steuben County Department of Social Services out of more than $1,100.

According to Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard, 35-year-old Brandon Leonard was arrested on Thursday following an investigation by the sheriff’s office and DSS. Between January 9 and June 30, Leonard is accused of filing false documents and receiving $1,158 in benefits he wasn’t eligible for.

Leonard is charged with four Class E felonies: Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the First Degree, Welfare Fraud in the Fourth Degree, Falsifying Business Records in the First Degree, and Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree.

He was released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Village of Bath Court at a later date.

Sheriff Allard thanked the DSS Fraud and Legal Affairs Unit and the District Attorney’s Office for their assistance in the investigation.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
