A local group is voicing strong concerns over a proposed wind turbine project in Cayuga County. The Alliance to Preserve the Finger Lakes is concerned about Liberty Renewables’ plan to install 24 industrial wind turbines—each 680 feet tall—in the towns of Scipio and Venice.
Alliance spokesperson Anita Dungey says the project, called the Agricola Wind Project, would be built on prime farmland, potentially impacting the region’s landscape and long-term agricultural viability.
While the group acknowledges that landowners have rights, Dungey says many haven’t been fully informed of the project’s scope or its long-term consequences. She adds that once a project exceeds 24 megawatts—as this one does—local control is lost and the state takes over decision-making.
A public hearing hosted by the state’s Office of Renewable Energy Siting is scheduled for August 6 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Auburn. Residents will have the opportunity to comment on the proposal.
