Gastrointestinal surgeon Dr. Margaret Spinosa’s roots run deep in Central New York.  Her father is from Port Byron. She grew up in Baldwinsville and graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science from Syracuse University.
Now the Central New York native is pleased to be home as a new member of the Auburn Gastroenterology team at Auburn Community Hospital. Her first day on the job was June 2nd, 2025.
“I was born and raised here, so Auburn is near and dear to my heart. I have enjoyed getting to know the hospital community. We have a large population in Cayuga County, and it’s critically important that we deliver the highest quality of care possible to the patients we serve,” said Dr. Spinosa.
In addition to being a Syracuse University graduate, Dr. Spinosa completed her medical education at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.  She spent the following six years in Pennsylvania for her internship and residency at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Internal Medicine, and then completed her Gastroenterology Fellowship at Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania.
“Not only does Auburn Community Hospital provide first-class health care to patients, we also strive to have ‘hometown heroes’ on our team. It means a lot to the people we serve to have highly respected and talented physicians on staff who are from Central New York, and live in our Auburn Community,” said Auburn Community Hospital President and Chief Executive Officer Scott A. Berlucchi.
Dr. Spinosa will be one of a team of physicians and health care professionals at Auburn Gastroenterology who will work closely with the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Auburn Community Center.  Having both health care sites in close proximity allows patients to receive community care without having to travel many miles between appointments.

“Our patients are cared for by doctors who live in our community, care about our community, and who work hard every day to make Cayuga County a healthier place to live,” said Auburn Community Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jamie Syrett.
“Gastroenterology is one field of discipline that’s incredibly pivotal and important in colon cancer screening. Everyone 45 and older should be screened in some way. Thankfully, gastroenterology has evolved so much over the last few years. There’s been more research and therapies that we can provide, that are easily accessible, that can improve the quality of life for the patients we care for,” added Dr. Spinosa, who encourages people in and around Cayuga County to engage in regular checkups for colon cancer.
Anyone who wants to make an appointment can contact Auburn Gastroenterology directly at 315.253.5151. The office is located at 1 Park Avenue, Auburn, NY, 13021. More information can be found on the hospital’s website: AuburnHospital.org.
From the main page, click “Practices and Departments.” Scroll down towards the bottom of the page titled “Auburn Medical Group Physician Practice,” where you will see the link to lock for Auburn Gastroenterology.
“Practicing medicine and helping people heal is very important to me. I’m honored to give back in this way, to a community that gave so much to me. I come to work every day excited to get started. I’ve felt nothing but support from fellow doctors, hospital administrators, and even from patients. There is a lot of positivity and support flowing around Auburn Community Hospital,” concluded Dr. Spinosa.
