Man Taken into Custody After Threats of Violence in Ithaca

SHARE NOW

A tense situation unfolded Thursday after a man contacted police claiming he had received death threats and was prepared to use violence.

The individual, whose name has not been released, made multiple calls to the Ithaca Police Department, prompting an immediate law enforcement response. The man, who was known to police, told dispatchers he was armed. Members of the Ithaca-Tompkins County Negotiation Team made contact with him to assess his mental and emotional state. He initially agreed to meet officers at Upper Buttermilk Falls State Park, but communication soon became sporadic. Out of concern for his safety and the safety of others, members of the Ithaca-Tompkins Response Team located and safely took the man into custody without incident.

Authorities credited a coordinated effort for the peaceful outcome. Agencies involved included the New York State Police, New York State Park Police, Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, Bangs Ambulance, and the Ithaca Fire Department.

No injuries were reported, and the investigation is ongoing.
