A Florida woman has been charged in Ontario County after allegedly collecting thousands of dollars in SNAP benefits she was no longer eligible for.
According to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, 55-year-old Dawn Hyde of Bradenton, Florida, was arrested Tuesday morning on an active warrant for fourth-degree grand larceny. Investigators say the charge stems from a theft that occurred between August 1, 2022, and April 30, 2023, while Hyde was living in the Town of Hopewell.
Authorities say Hyde filed for and received $2,217 in SNAP benefits, but failed to report that she had moved out of New York State. Once she was living in Florida, she continued receiving the benefits, prompting an investigation and the issuance of a warrant.
Hyde turned herself in at the Ontario County Jail, where she was arraigned and released to appear in Hopewell Town Court at a later date.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
