Penn Yan, Ithaca Airports Receiving Federal Upgrade Funds

More than $21 million in federal funding is being distributed to 16 airports across New York State—several of them in the Finger Lakes—for key upgrades to improve safety and modernize facilities.

At Penn Yan Airport, over $778,000 has been awarded through the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program. Of that, $271,000 will fund the rehabilitation of more than 3,500 feet of existing paved runway and lighting systems. An additional $507,000 will go toward replacing aging snow removal equipment, including a carrier vehicle that has exceeded its useful life.

Ithaca-Tompkins International Airport will receive more than $1.8 million. That includes $1.03 million for new snow removal equipment, $731,000 to rehabilitate 3,200 feet of paved runway, and $128,000 for aircraft rescue and firefighting equipment.

“Investing in our local airports is essential to strengthening our regional infrastructure and economy,” said Congressman Nick Langworthy. “I’m proud to support these FAA grants, which will make necessary upgrades that improve safety, access, and future growth opportunities for our communities.”

“From big cities to rural communities, New York’s airports are gateways for commerce, tourism, and travel. It’s vital that every airport has the resources it needs to provide a safe and comfortable experience for anyone who travels through our state,” said Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. “That’s why I’m proud to announce more than $21 million for airport projects that will deliver critical safety and infrastructure upgrades while enhancing reliability and comfort. I look forward to seeing the impact these improvements will have and will continue fighting for more federal funding to support the upgrades that airports across the country desperately need.”

The federal investment is part of a broader effort to enhance airport operations, safety, and the passenger experience statewide.
