A bicyclist was airlifted to the hospital Wednesday afternoon after being struck by a car at the intersection of State Route 21 and Bushwood Lane in Ontario County.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene around 1:30 p.m. and determined that the driver, Daniel Austin, of Clifton Springs, was traveling northeast on Route 21 when he attempted to turn left onto Bushwood Lane in Canandaigua. During the turn, he struck 30-year-old Matthew Coons, of Canandaigua, who was riding an electric bicycle in the opposite direction. Coons, who was not wearing a helmet at the time, suffered a leg injury and was flown to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Coons was issued a citation for failing to wear a helmet. Austin was cited for failure to yield the right-of-way while making a left turn.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
