An Ithaca woman is undergoing a mental health evaluation after a confrontation with police during a welfare check last week.
According to the Ithaca Police Department, an officer responded around 8:20 a.m. on July 3 to the intersection of Pearsall Place and Hawthorne Place to check on a woman reportedly sleeping near the sidewalk.
When the officer woke the 28-year-old woman, she allegedly demanded the officer’s firearm and then tried to forcibly remove it from its holster. The officer used physical force to stop the attempt and prevent the situation from escalating further.
The woman was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for an emergency mental health assessment. Charges are pending.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
