UPDATE: The National Weather Service has confirmed it was an EF-2 tornado that touched down in Phelps Monday night.
The preliminary damage survey indicates that peak wind gusts reached 115 miles per hour. The tornado lasted for approximately 10 minutes and was on the ground for 1.7 miles. The width of the tornado was 300 yards. No injuries or deaths resulted from Monday night’s storm.
A probable tornado Monday evening caused damage to homes, vehicles, utility poles and trees in Phelps. National Weather Service officials will visit the damaged areas on County Road 23 and Fort Hill Road.
Speaking to 13 WHAM News Ontario County Sheriff David Cirencione said “Just shock, we don’t get storms this powerful that often, and to come and see two homes that have their roofs completely ripped off of them in the span of five minutes, that’s something to see. And the damaged parts, the parts that were removed from these residences, were carried out into those fields. Chunks of metal steel roofing scattered all over this area.”
No injuries have been reported.
A funnel cloud was also spotted near Romulus in Seneca County.
