Two Injured in Route 54 Collision in Yates County

SHARE NOW

Two people were taken to the hospital following a two-car crash Saturday afternoon on State Route 54 at the intersection with Pre-Emption Road in the Town of Benton.

According to the Yates County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred just after five Saturday afternoon when a vehicle driven by Brian Leyde, of Fly Creek, New York, struck the rear of a car operated by Sydney Spaulding of Penn Yan. Investigators say Spaulding was attempting to turn north onto Pre-Emption Road when her vehicle was hit from behind.

Leyde and his passenger were transported by Penn Yan Ambulance to F.F. Thompson Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Spaulding was treated at the scene and released.

Leyde was issued a traffic ticket for following too closely. Authorities say additional charges may be pending as the investigation continues.

Responding agencies included the Yates County Sheriff’s Office, Penn Yan Police Department, Yates County and Penn Yan Ambulance services, and the Penn Yan Fire Department.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
