“Healthy Habits Grow with Us” Campaign Launches to Tackle Chronic Disease and Cancer in Finger Lakes
In a regional effort to combat rising rates of cancer and chronic disease, local health departments across the Finger Lakes have launched a new prevention campaign aimed at families.
The initiative, titled “Healthy Habits Grow with Us,” is spearheaded by the Pivital Public Health Partnership and involves eight counties: Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, Yates, Chemung, and Livingston.
With cancer and chronic disease rates exceeding state benchmarks in many parts of the region, the campaign encourages parents to start building healthy habits early in their children’s lives—habits that can lead to better long-term health outcomes.
The campaign promotes four key messages:
- Sun Safety – Use sunscreen, hats, and seek shade to protect skin.
- Fresh Food – Swap junk food for fruits and vegetables.
- More Movement – Encourage daily physical activity.
- Regular Check-Ups – Prioritize healthcare and model positive relationships with providers.
“By focusing on simple, achievable habits when our kids are small, we’re setting them up for healthier futures,” said Michele Foster, Executive Director of the Pivital Public Health Partnership.
Throughout the summer and beyond, local health departments will share resources, tips, and community events related to the campaign. For more information and tools to support family wellness, visit ontariocountyny.gov/public-health.
