A GoFundMe campaign is gaining support for Joe Pilozzi, a beloved EMT and handyman who was seriously injured while working security at the Shortsville Carnival Saturday night.
Pilozzi, a single father of two, was trying to break up a fight involving a group of juveniles when he was attacked. According to the fundraiser, one of the teens sucker punched him, fracturing his lower jaw, while another jumped on his back. Bystanders intervened and helped get Pilozzi to safety. The juveniles involved were later arrested, though it’s unclear what charges they may face due to their age.
Pilozzi was taken by ambulance to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he now faces surgery for his injuries. Friends say he does not have health insurance or a secondary income and is already worried about how to support his family and keep up with his handyman work while recovering.
On Wednesday, the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office investigation concluded that a juvenile male was the primary aggressor in the physical altercation. The suspect is accused of striking the victim in the face multiple times with a closed fist. The unidentified juvenile was arrested on an assault charge and arraigned in Ontario County Court.
The sheriff’s department said its investigation into the disturbance is still active, with the possibility of more arrests being made.
The GoFundMe page describes Pilozzi as a devoted father and generous friend who has dedicated years to emergency medical service and recently pursued his dream of becoming a handyman. The fundraiser calls on the community to support him during what it describes as an “absolutely insane event.”
Donations are being accepted online to help cover medical bills and living expenses during his recovery.
