A Senate Judiciary Committee hearing got underway Wednesday for Emil Bove, a Seneca Falls native nominated by President Donald Trump to serve on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Bove, a former federal prosecutor who later represented Trump in legal matters, has faced criticism for his role in advancing the former administration’s agenda during his time at the U.S. Department of Justice. During Wednesday’s hearing, the committee’s ranking Democrat outlined several controversial decisions Bove made as a top DOJ official during Trump’s first term.
Ties to Trump under the spotlight
President Trump nominated Bove last month as part of a new wave of judicial appointments since returning to office in January 2025. The nomination has drawn sharp attention from Democrats, who say Bove’s close relationship with Trump and his work at the DOJ raise questions about his impartiality.
Supporters, however, have praised Bove’s legal acumen and courtroom experience, pointing to his time as a federal prosecutor in the Southern District of New York, where he led high-profile national security and narcotics cases.
3rd Circuit seat in focus
If confirmed, Bove would serve on the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals, which hears federal cases from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Philadelphia-based court plays a key role in shaping legal precedent in the Northeast.
The committee is expected to vote on advancing Bove’s nomination in the coming weeks, though the full Senate must still confirm the appointment.
