Police say a man they found slumped over the steering wheel of a car in the parking lot of the Super 8 Hotel in Bath identified himself as his dead brother to evade arrest on an active warrant.
The incident happened on May 12th. During the welfare check, police said the incident evolved into a suspicious activity investigation and the individual was detained. Upon his release, Bath Police continued their investigation and that is when they determined 37-year-old Steven Hirsch had allegedly given them his deceased brother’s name in an attempt to avoid arrest on a warrant. A new warrant was issued for Hirsch’s arrest and he was taken into custody by State Police this week.
Hirsch was charged with criminal impersonation and obstructing governmental administration.
Bath Police thanked the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police for their help in the investigation.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
