In 1966, Congress and President Lyndon B. Johnson officially designated Waterloo as the “Birthplace of Memorial Day.”
The designation has stood the test of time, and the Seneca County community is preparing for its annual Celebrate Commemorate activities that begin today.
Events run through Monday. Waterloo commemorates Memorial Day on the original date of May 30th.
