Eight of the ten correction officers accused in the fatal beating of inmate Robert Brooks at Marcy Correctional Facility have declined plea deals and will face trial in Oneida County Court.
On Monday, the final two officers formally rejected plea offers from the special prosecutor’s office, which would have resulted in 15 to 18 years in prison in exchange for guilty pleas to select charges.
WSYR-TV reported all eight remaining defendants are headed toward a joint trial, unless the judge grants requests to try the cases separately. A trial date has not yet been set. If convicted of murder, each officer could face more than 25 years in prison.
Two other officers have already pleaded guilty to their roles in the 2023 death of Brooks.
