SHARE NOW

A Sonyea man has been indicted on murder and assault charges following the death of an inmate at Groveland Correctional Facility.

New York State Police responded to the prison on October 26, where they found 36-year-old Rashawn Belle dead. A second inmate was also injured and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

On Thursday, the Livingston County District Attorney’s Office announced that 53-year-old Gabriel Jasmin, who was incarcerated at the time, has been formally charged. Prosecutors say Jasmin used a “deadly weapon or dangerous instrument” during the incident. He faces charges of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree assault.

If convicted, Jasmin could face up to 25 years to life in prison. He was arraigned on Tuesday and is scheduled to appear in Livingston County Court again on July 1.
