A Town of Brutus resident has been arrested on a warrant issued out of Auburn City Court.
The arrest of Jana Michel stems from a welfare fraud investigation conducted by the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office, and Cayuga County Department of Social Services. It is alleged that the 44-year-old failed to report household income, resulting in her receiving benefits that she was not entitled to. Michel was charged with grand larceny, welfare fraud, offering a false instrument for filing, and misuse of food stamps.
According to Sheriff Brian Schenck, welfare fraud is a crime and members of the Sheriff’s Office will continue to partner with the District Attorney’s Office and Department of Social Services to investigate, arrest and prosecute offenders within Cayuga County.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
