NYS Required Boating Safety Course Offered in Hector

SHARE NOW

An in-person course that leads to the required state boating certificate soon will be offered at the Valois-Logan-Hector Fire Department by the Finger Lakes Chapter of America’s Boating Club.

The eight-hour course will meet on May 21 and May 28 from 6-9 p.m. Course review and the final exam will be on June 4, starting at 6 p.m. The firehall is located at 5736 Route 414, Hector.

The fee is $35 or $45, depending on whether the student wants to have a copy of the course materials to keep. If two family members share a borrowed manual, the fee is just $10 for the second person.

Class size is limited. To register and for more details, contact Finger Lakes Chapter Education Officer Katie Alley at [email protected].

“This course is taught by passionate instructors who have decades of on-the-water experience,” Alley said, stressing the value of in-person classes.

The America’s Boating Club course covers many components of safe boating, including docking, maneuvering, anchoring, vessel lighting, equipment, federal and state navigation laws and how to handle medical and mechanical emergencies while on the water.

Everyone, regardless of age, now must have a New York State Boater Safety Education Certificate to legally operate a motorized vessel, including personal watercraft, commonly known as jet skis, and sailboats with a motor. Age requirements under the safety certificate law, known as Brianna’s Law, have gradually expanded over the last few years to include all operators. People renting boats are among the very few exceptions to the law.
