People gathered Monday night at the Wood Library in Canandaigua to remember the life of Sam Nordquist, the 24-year-old transgender Minnesota man who police said was murdered in the Finger Lakes region after enduring months of torture.
Yesterday afternoon Family members and friends gathered along the Geneva lakefront and released ballons in Sam’s memory.
Sam’s mother, Linda Nordquist believes it was a hate crime.
A joint statement issued Sunday by Ontario County District Attorney Jim Ritts and New York State Police indicated there is currently no evidence to suggest the murder was a hate crime.
Five people have been charged with murder, more arrests are possible.
Tonight Geneva residents are holding a vigil from 6 to 8 at the First Presbyterian Church.
