Wesley Hines has been chosen by his colleagues as the “2024 Penn Yan Police Officer of the Year.”

Officer Hines grew up in Woodruff, South Carolina before moving to the Finger Lakes when he was 19. He attended Genesee Community College before attending the Rural Police Training Academy in Batavia. Officer Hines was hired part-time at the Penn Yan Police Department in 2019. In 2023, he was hired as a full-time police officer in Watkins Glen. In 2024, Officer Hines was hired full-time at the Penn Yan Police Department.

“Officer Hines consistently shows up to work with a great attitude and is constantly striving to learn and do better,” said Penn Yan Police Chief Thomas Dunham. “Officer Hines is always willing to pick up an extra shift and consistently goes above and beyond the call of duty. On behalf of the entire department and community, I would like to congratulate Officer Hines and thank him for his commitment to keeping Penn Yan safe.”

Officer Hines led the department in arrests, tickets, and DWIs in 2024.

Chief Dunham said every year members of the department select one officer to receive its “Officer of the Year” award. Each member of the department votes on who they feel has exceeded the duty requirements of his or her position and has demonstrated a distinct pattern of community service coupled with professional achievement. Officers may also consider specific acts of heroism or incidents where an officer went above and beyond the call of duty.
