A nearly five-hour long standoff with police ended peacefully for a Central New York man who claimed he was armed with multiple firearms.
Shortly before midnight Saturday morning, Onondaga County 911 received a call from Nathan McRae, of Clay, requesting police assistance. The 35-year-old then stated he was armed with multiple firearms.
Upon arrival, Onondaga County Sheriff’s deputies were informed by McRae that he wanted to kill police officers and that he possessed several firearms. In response, a reverse 911 notification was sent to residents in the surrounding area advising them to stay in place for their safety.
It was determined that the Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was needed to manage the situation after McRae refused to exit his residence. Negotiations began, and during the nearly five-hour standoff, McRae indicated that his intent to harm law enforcement stemmed from a correctional facility video released earlier in the day.
Around 4:40 AM, after successful negotiations, McRae exited his apartment and peacefully surrendered to Sheriff’s negotiators and SWAT members. He was taken into custody without incident.
McRae was charged with a felony count of Making Terroristic Threats. He is currently in the custody of the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.
This is still an open investigation; search warrants are being executed to determine if Nathan Braemar had any firearm in his possession.
