America’s oldest living president, Jimmy Carter, passed away on Sunday at the age of 100. Carter was in hospice care for more than a year. As the 39th President of the United States, Carter served from 1977 to 1981.
Governor Kathy Hochul released the following statement after news of President Carter’s passing was made public.
“President Jimmy Carter embodied decency and integrity throughout his life of public service. I’ll never forget as a teenager meeting him in Buffalo. He was an inspiration to me and so many Americans. Our hearts are with the Carter family during this difficult time.”
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand also released a statement:
“I’m heartbroken to hear of the passing of President Jimmy Carter – a lifelong activist, humanitarian, and advocate for peace. He leaves behind a legacy of fighting for a more just world. My thoughts are with his entire family at this time. President Carter will be deeply missed.”
A member of the Democratic Party, Carter was the longest-lived president in U.S. history and the first and only to reach 100 years of age.
