The state DEC office in Steuben County was emailed a bomb threat on Sunday.
State Police say the threat targeted the Bath office. A thorough search of the building was conducted and no explosive devices were found. The investigation into the threat is ongoing.
Investigators did not say if the threat was in response to a social media firestorm that has erupted over the last few days after word got out that the state DEC and Chemung County Health Department seized and later euthanized an orphaned squirrel and raccoon from a home in Pine Valley. The DEC and the Chemung County Health Department said Friday that the squirrel and raccoon were put down so they could be tested for rabies after Peanut bit someone involved in the investigation that wildlife was being kept illegally at the property.
Peanut the Squirrel was an Instagram sensation, with more than 550-THOUSAND followers. His owners used that popularity to help raise money for their animal sanctuary.
By the way, the DEC has yet to officially explain to Peanut’s owners why they seized the animals.
