Report: Gun Violence Down Across the Empire State

SHARE NOW

Gun violence is down in the Empire State.

According to data released by the governor’s office, reported shootings with injury are down 26% to date for 2024 when compared to the same period in 2023. From January 1 through September 30, 476 shootings with injury were reported in 2024 while 646 were reported in 2023. So far, 2024 has seen the fewest shootings reported since the state began tracking this data in 2006.

The data comes from the 28 police departments outside of New York City participating in New York’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) initiative. GIVE provides nearly $36 million to police departments, district attorney’s offices, probation departments, and sheriff’s offices in 21 counties outside of New York City.

“Our record investments in law enforcement and in critical programs like the GIVE initiative are making a real difference in every corner of our state,” said Governor Hochul.

Particularly significant declines were reported in six areas: Utica (52%), Troy (48%), Niagara Falls (40%), Rochester (38%), Long Island (36%), and Syracuse (29%). Additionally, the New York City Police Department reported a 9% decrease in shootings through October 13.

Overall crime oustide of the city has also declined, according to the governor’s office, with the 57 counties outside NYC reporting a 9% decrease in index crime from January through May 2024.
