Beaver Dams Man Airlifted After Leading Police on Chase in Steuben County

A Schuyler County man was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital after crashing his car while leading police on a pursuit in Steuben County.

State Police say they initially responded to an incident at a gas station on West Morris Street in the village of Bath on Thursday night for the driver of a car who was allegedly driving around the parking lot trying to hit people. 70-year-old Daniel Sheldon, of Beaver Dams, failed to comply when Troopers attempted a traffic stop and took off on State Route 415 westbound. At one point, Sheldon failed to negotiate a curve and left the road, striking a guardrail and going into a field before overturning.

Sheldon was taken to Rochester for treatment of serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. State Police say their criminal investigation into the matter is ongoing.

The New York State Police were assisted by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, the Bath Police Department, the Bath Fire Department, the Bath Ambulance, the New York State Department of Transportation, the Kanona Fire Department, and the Steuben County ALS.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
