Mosquitoes in Onondaga County have tested positive for several viruses.
The Onondaga County Health Department announced on Wednesday that it was notified by the New York State Department of Health that mosquito pools from traps in two locations tested positive for viruses.
West Nile Virus (WNV) and Flanders Virus (FLAV) were detected at East Taft Road in Cicero while Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus (EEEV), WNV, FLAV, and Highlands J Virus (HJV) were detected at Route 298 in East Syracuse.
On July 16, the department announced previous findings of FLAV and Jamestown Canyon Virus (JCV).
“While mosquito counts in Central New York are relatively low, the presence of these viruses show the importance of taking measures to protect yourself and your family from mosquito bites during outdoor activities throughout the summer,” stated Onondaga County Health Commissioner Dr. Kathryn Anderson.
Symptoms of mosquito-borne illnesses include fever, headache, neck, muscle, and joint pain, rash, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Tips to keep yourself safe from mosquitoes can be found on the health department’s website.
