One Person Killed, Two Others Injured in Cayuga County Accident

SHARE NOW

A fatal motor vehicle accident in Cayuga County Friday afternoon that involved several cars and a tractor-trailer remains under investigation.

According to a preliminary investigation by State Police, a tractor-trailer operated by 59-year-old Raymond Swank, of Union Springs, was traveling west through a work zone on State Routes 5 & 20 in Aurelius when it failed to slow for stopped traffic, striking a 2016 BMW X5, operated by a 74-year-old man. The impact caused a secondary collision with a 2015 Honda Accord, operated by 65-year-old Dale Leone, of Auburn. Subsequently, this caused a tertiary collision with a 2014 Chevy Cruise, operated by 22-year-old Isis Binns, of Aurora.

The unidentified 74-year-old driver of the BMW was pronounced dead at the scene. Swank and Leone were not injured. A passenger in Leone’s car, Jeffrey Leone, was transported by Auburn City Ambulance to Auburn Community Hospital for minor injuries. Binns was taken by Cayuga Ambulance to Upstate Community Hospital for minor injuries.

This investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed.
