Yates County Sets Public Hearing on Moving Local Elections

SHARE NOW

The Yates County Legislature on Tuesday set a public hearing on a proposed local law that would move the elections of county legislators to even-numbered years.

The public hearing on the proposed resolution is the result of a law that Governor Kathy Hochul signed in December moving some local elections — including those for county and town offices — to run alongside state and federal elections in even-numbered years. The Democrat says the move will save money, increase voter turnout for local races, and help combat voter fatigue.

Onondaga and Nassau counties have filed challenges saying the law violates home rule and conflicts with its county’s charter. On Monday, the Dutchess County legislature passed a resolution authorizing the county to sue and Oneida County has also authorized a potential lawsuit.

The public hearing on May 13th will take place at 1 p.m. in the Legislative Chambers at 417 Liberty Street, Penn Yan.
