CDC: Northeast Seeing Surge in Norovirus Cases

SHARE NOW

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control, the Northeast region of the county has the highest positivity rate for norovirus, which causes vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps. Other symptoms include fever, headaches and body aches.

The CDC says the three-week average for positive norovirus tests is at over 15% in the Northeast. Out West, positive tests are reported to be around 12%, 10% in the Southern region and 9% in the Midwest. On average, there are around 19 to 21 million cases of norovirus every year in the U.S., which results in an average of 900 deaths.

The CDC says people exposed to the virus usually show symptoms within 12 to 48 hours. Those who were infected will likely start feeling better between one and three days but can still spread the norovirus for several days after symptoms subside.
