House Resolution to Free Dansville Man From Taliban Advances

SHARE NOW

A resolution that calls for the Taliban to immediately release a Finger Lakes man who has been wrongfully detained since August of 2022 has passed the House Foreign Affairs Committee unanimously.

The resolution calling for Ryan Corbett’s release was introduced by Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, who claims the Dansville man has been kept in a basement cell without regular access to a bathroom, medical care, or sunlight.  The Dansville man and his family left Afghanistan when American forces withdrew in 2021 but he returned a year later to salvage what was left of his business and pay his employees when he was unlawfully detained.

Tenney worked to get Ryan officially designated as a wrongful detainee by the U.S. Department of State on October 10, 2023, and introduced H.Res. 965 on January 17, 2024, further strengthening calls for his immediate release.

“By advancing this resolution out of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, we reaffirm that America will never stop fighting to free Ryan Corbett,” said Congresswoman Tenney. “Thank you to Chairman McCaul for his leadership and to the 62 cosponsors of this critical legislation, whose support bolsters the voices of millions of Americans nationwide calling for Ryan’s immediate release. I look forward to seeing this legislation considered on the House floor soon, where Congress can continue to advocate for Ryan’s immediate release.”

“The Taliban are evil terrorists who commit unfathomable atrocities and take Americans hostage,” said Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman McCaul. “I want to assure Ryan’s friends and family that we will continue to fight every day until we bring him home. I am proud to support this bipartisan legislation sending a strong message to the Taliban that America, both Republicans and Democrats alike, will not tolerate the illegitimate detention of American citizens.”
