Wayne Central School Superintendent Joe Siracuse Ed.D released a statement Tuesday night regarding the evacuation of the high school earlier in the day:
“Thank you for your understanding and cooperation throughout today’s situation. We understand that it can be difficult not to have all the information in real time, and are sorry for any inconvenience or undue stress caused by the day’s events.
This morning, a staff member at the high school received a threatening phone message on their school voicemail. The district immediately involved the administration, our Director of Safety and Security, School Resource Officer (SRO), and local law enforcement. While the threat was somewhat vague, it was severe enough to warrant engaging our safety protocols, including an evacuation of our high school to the middle school. After a thorough investigation led by law enforcement, it was determined that no credible threat existed and it was safe to return to the high school.
Please know that in a situation such as this, we will always act in the best interest of our school community, with safety at the forefront. We understand that individuals may respond to stressful situations in a variety of ways. Counselors will be available for students and staff should they need support.
As challenging as today was, it served as yet another reminder of the professionalism and responsiveness of our staff, and the preparedness of our students to respond so adeptly to unknown circumstances. A sincere thank you to our partners in law enforcement, our staff in all corners of the district, our families, and students.”
Students at one local high school were evacuated from their building late Tuesday morning after the school district reportedly received a threat.
The Wayne High School students were taken to the nearby middle school while K9 units from the Wayne and Ontario County Sheriff’s Offices searched the building. After no credible threat was found, the students returned to the high school at around 1 o’clock.
