One local environmental group is making it easier to have a green Christmas and a happy New Year.
Cayuga Climate Action (CCA) is holding its first post-holiday styrofoam recycling event. On January 6, from 10:00a-2:00p, you can drop off used white polystyrene from any gifts you’ve received at locations in Auburn, Fair Haven, Ledyard, and Weedsport for proper disposal.
Dominic Gambaiani with CCA told Finger Lakes News Radio that improper disposal of styrofoam can be hazardous to the environment.
“Styrofoam is super easy to break apart and end up in our waterways and our fish and our wildlife and ultimately in our bodies if we eat those fish and wildlife,” Gambaiani said. “Also, it’s just ugly to see on the side of the road.”
Gambaiani added that the four locations are strategically placed to be conveniently accessible to anyone in Cayuga County. Those locations are BOCES (1879 W Genesee St Rd, Auburn), the Weedsport Recycling Center (2621 Earl St, Weedsport), the Ledyard Transfer Station (858 Carpenter Rd, Aurora), and just south of the Fair Haven village hall on Cayuga St.
The styrofoam must be clean and white. Packing peanuts will cannot be accepted.
