NYSP: More than 1,100 Candidates Attend Processing Weekend

SHARE NOW

New York State Police had the highest Trooper candidate processing turnout in over a decade. Over 1,100 candidates attended the processing weekend held in Albany on the weekend of December 2nd.

To be eligible to attend a processing weekend, a candidate must first apply to take and pass a Trooper entrance examination – a computer-based exam available at 60 locations in New York State, 390 locations throughout the country, and 101 outside of the United States. Following the entrance examination, an eligibility list is established, and eligible candidates are invited to attend a processing weekend.

During processing weekend, candidates participate in a series of events including a Physical Ability Test, vision and hearing examinations, as well as education verification of college transcripts and the completion of a background questionnaire. After successful completion of all requirements, including a background investigation, candidates will then receive a Conditional Offer of Appointment to the position of New York State Trooper.

During its most recent recruitment campaign which ended on October 1, 2023, 12,691 individuals applied to take the exam. New York State Police saw a significant increase in applications among military members since Governor Kathy Hochul approved a request from the State Police to raise the maximum age to apply to become a New York State Trooper from 29 to 34.

In addition to raising the age requirement, the State Police also revised its tattoo policy in 2022. If any portion of a tattoo, brand, and/or body art is visible when wearing the short-sleeve summer uniform, the member must wear the long-sleeve uniform shirt, with a tie. Candidates can review the entire tattoo policy here. Candidates can learn about becoming a New York State Trooper and sign up to take the exam today at joinstatepolice.ny.gov. Applications are being accepted until March 4, 2024.

Starting salary upon appointment to the academy is $64,346. Minimum total compensation after one year of service is $98,300 – $109,009 with excellent benefits and retirement.
