Steuben County Man Charged With Arson, Cruelty to Animals

SHARE NOW

A Steuben County man is facing a number of felonies for a series of incidents that occurred over a three-day period starting in late September.

On September 29th, Duane Cansdale, Junior, is accused of intentionally starting an open fire on the floor of the trailer he resided at on State Route 63 in Wayland in an attempt to stay warm. He took off before police and firefighters arrived but was arrested a short time later. The next day, Cansdale is accused of violating a Stay Away Order of Protection when he went to a home in Wayland and physically took a dog from a residence after getting into a verbal altercation. When Troopers located Cansdale, he refused to comply and was allegedly pulling the dog down the street with a choke collar so forcefully it caused the animal to vomit multiple times. On October 1st, the 30-year-old was spotted by another person back at the side of the burned-down trailer retrieving property with a protected party of a Stay Away Order of Protection.

In total, Cansdale was charged with a half-dozen felonies for arson, aggravated cruelty to animals, and aggravated family offense. He was being held in the Steuben County Jail pending his next court appearance.
