A long-time employee of Wegmans was sentenced on Tuesday to one year in prison for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the grocery store chain.
Between 2014 and February 2023, Alica Torres fraudulently processed approximately 350 credit card refund requests in customers’ names with fictitious amounts while using the Enterprise System to fill customers’ prescriptions. The U.S. Attorney’s Office reports the 48-year-old from Webster, Monroe County, worked at Wegmans for 27 years and tricked the pharmacist on duty to sign off on and authorize the fraudulent refund requests. Once approved, Torres paid the refund amounts to herself by swiping her bank debit card in Wegmans’ point of sale system. During this nine-year span, Torres stole $568,000 in refunds. She also fraudulently used gift cards to steal $11,000 dollars from Wegmans between 2020 and this past February.
In addition to prison time for the wire fraud conviction, Torres was ordered to pay back $578,000 in restitution.
