Interlaken Village Board Opposes Seneca Meadows Expansion

SHARE NOW

It’s about 25-miles from Seneca Falls to Interlaken, but the southern Seneca County Village voted last week to oppose the expansion of the Seneca Meadows Landfill.

The Finger Lakes Times reports the village is affected because of garbage truck traffic and leachate and methane emissions negatively impacting agri-tourism. Village officials ask that state officials “immediately start reducing solid waste by implementing the DEC’s New York State Solid Waste Management Plan, thereby reducing, recycling and eliminating many tons of solid waste currently designated for landfills.”

The Seneca Meadows Landfill in Seneca Falls

is holding its second community meeting regarding the Valley Infill Permit Application Thursday night at 6pm at the Seneca Falls Community Center.

Detailed information on SMI’s application to the state Department of Environmental Conservation will be presented. Approval of the expansion would extend the landfill’s life to 2040, based on current deposit rates.

DEC is not expected to issue a decision until later next year.
