The Bath man who was shot by police after he fired at them at the end of a six hour standoff last month has been indicted on 44 counts, including 43 felonies, related to the incident.
The indictment alleges the 51-year-old Schoonover fired multiple shots from a 16-gauge shotgun at officers from the State Police, the Bath Village Police Department and Steuben County Sheriff’s Office. The August 20th standoff started following a domestic incident, in which neighbors were evacuated. It came to an end shortly after 1 the following morning when Schoonover shot at police and they fired back, striking him in the leg.
Schoonover was indicted on the following charges:
- 12 counts of first-degree attempted murder, a class A-1 felony;
- 12 counts of second-degree attempted murder, a class B violent felony;
- 12 counts of first-degree criminal use of a firearm, a class B felony;
- 1 count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class D felony;
- 5 counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, a class D felony;
- 1 count of third-degree assault, a class A felony; and
- 1 count of endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor
Schoonover was hospitalized in Rochester for the gunshot wound and is now incarcerated at the Steuben County Jail.
