As people head out to enjoy the waterways throughout the Finger Lakes, Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck is reminding boaters of the dangers of boating under the influence.
Speaking with Finger Lakes News Radio, Schenck said while you can have alcohol on a boat, his office’s concern is with people consuming too much alcohol while operating a craft that could potentially put the lives of multiple people at risk.
He adds the penalties for boating while under the influence are similar to those of driving while intoxicated, including jail time. Beyond the penalties though, Schenck says that you’ll have to live with the fact that your decision could lead to serious injury or death to others on the water.
With recreational marijuana now legal in the state, the sheriff believes the increase of people boating under the influence of cannabis is inevitable. He reminds boaters that being under the influence doesn’t only apply to alcohol.
The sheriff’s office maintains four watercraft for patrol during the summer, including three permanently stationed on Owasco Lake, Cayuga Lake, and Lake Ontario for patrol. The office regularly conducts safety checks along the county’s waterways. “We do encounter individuals along the lake’s and waterways that are enjoying boating season and one of the things we do is check their boats,” said Schenck. “Our primary goal is safety.”
For those interested in obtaining a Boating Safety Certificate, something that will be required for anyone operating a motorized boat beginning in 2025, you can visit the New York State Park’s website.
