A Rochester native and Hobart graduate is challenging incumbent Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York in a Democratic primary in 2024.
William Schweitzer announced his candidacy this week.
Schweitzer, a business owner, worked in politics after studying political science at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
Schweitzer also served with the Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment, where he completed multiple combat tours in Afghanistan.
Schweitzer tells Finger Lakes Daily News, “I’m really focused on strengthening our families. Issues like paid leave and job creation will make a big difference but also focusing on ending gun violence is hugely important to me – and affects our families. As a veteran of the special operations community I know my stance on this issue will have a big impact and I’m already building a coalition from this community to join me in speaking up. We have to stop these senseless killings.”
