2 Herons earn USBWA Rochester Area honors

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association recently announced that senior forward Lauren DeVaney and junior guard Brooke Jarvis of the William Smith College basketball team were named to its Rochester Area first team following strong 2022-23 seasons. This is Jarvis’ second straight year earning this recognition while DeVaney earns her first career first team honor after two consecutive honorable mention selections.

DeVaney appeared in 23 games in her senior season, posting a team-leading 12 double-doubles. She averaged 13.2 points per game and led the Liberty League in rebounds per game with 9.5. DeVaney shot .435 from the floor and led the conference with a .743 shooting percentage from the free throw line. She reached double-digit points in 19 contests this season, including a season-high 24 points against St. Lawrence. She also grabbed double-digit rebounds in 13 games, including a season-high 15 boards on three occasions.

In addition to USBWA first team honors, DeVaney was named to the All-Liberty League second team as well one Liberty League Performer of the Week selection.

Jarvis appeared in 24 games for the Herons and posted four double-doubles on the season. She was third in the Liberty League, averaging 15.1 points per game and eighth in the conference in rebounds per game with 7.1. She shot .365 from the floor and was second in the conference with a .686 shooting percentage from the free throw line. Jarvis reached double-digit points in 18 contests this season, including two 30-plus point performances in conference play.

In addition to USBWA first team honors, Jarvis was named to the All-Liberty League second team as well as being named to the Liberty League weekly honor roll on five occasions. She was named the 2021-22 Liberty League Rookie of the Year.

William Smith finished 7-18 overall with a 5-13 record in conference play. The Herons finished tied for eighth in the league standings.
