County Leaders in Albany for Annual Legislative Conference

Hundreds of county officials from across the state will gather are in Albany this week for the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) Legislative Conference.

During the three-day conference, attendees will participate in standing committee meetings, training workshops, policy discussions, keynote addresses, and business meetings.

NYSAC’s Legislative Conference occurs as state lawmakers are preparing for budget negotiations with Governor Hochul. County leaders are evaluating several proposals contained in the Governor’s budget that will impact local governments statewide, including:

  • A proposal to intercept $625 million in federal Medicaid funding traditionally shared with counties,
  • Increasing counties’ costs for paying assigned counsel attorneys,
  • Unprecedented changes to the property tax foreclosure process,
  • Cybersecurity funding, and
  • Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation.

Attendees will develop and vote on a series of resolutions to address these and other concerns.

The conference will also feature workshops and plenary sessions addressing topics including energy prices, a review of the state budget, an economic forecast, aging services, economic development, county healthcare costs, the cannabis industry, cybersecurity, environmental issues, housing, and emergency response.
