A text message scam is targeting Steuben County residents.
The county’s Department of Social Services warns the scam text tells people their EBT card has been locked and they must call a specific number and give their card number and pin. Some residents have already been scammed and the county’s DSS commissioner says those people have had their benefits stolen. The benefits were then reportedly used in other states.
DSS advises all residents they will never text you and ask for any information regarding your pin number or card number.
