A candidate has emerged to become the next mayor of the city of Ithaca just days after Laura Lewis announced she would not be seeking re-election.
Alderperson Robert Cantelmo currently represents the city’s 5th Ward on the Common Council after winning election in 2021. The Associate Director of the Einaudi Center for International Studies at Cornell is the first person to declare their intentions to run for mayor.
During last week’s State of the City address, Lewis announced she would not seek re-election, just weeks after being elected to serve out the remainder of Svante Myrick’s term. Myrick picked Lewis as acting mayor last February when he stepped down.
