One of the two prisoners that broke out of an Upstate New York prison more than three years ago is back in the region after being moved to the Auburn Correctional Facility.
David Sweat’s transfer was based on a bi-annual review conducted by the state. Prior to being transferred to Attica in 2017, Sweat spent time behind bars at the Five Points Correctional Facility in Romulus.
He was sentenced to life in prison for killing a Broome County Sheriff’s Deputy in 2002. The 37 year old was additionally sentenced for his escape, along with fellow inmate Richard Matt, from the Clinton Correctional Facility in 2015. Matt was killed during the three week manhunt, while Sweat was captured near the Canadian border.
Their escape is the subject of a new series currently airing on Showtime called “Escape at Dannemora.”
